02 Apr The Art of Fundraising – an awesome title!
Today’s post is an unabashed “plug” for the best conference in Ottawa if you – or your organization – are relatively new to the “Art of Fundraising.”
Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the conference takes place Tuesday May 7th at the Hampton Inn, located right off the 417 at Vanier Parkway – it’s super convenient.
You should attend the conference if….
You are trying to start an individual giving program.
I receive many calls from organizations trying to figure out their first step into individual giving. My suggestion is always the same: go to AFP’s annual fundraising conference, and bring back information to your organization. At $265 the price is right: if you can validate one new strategy for 2013, or determine what your superstar fundraising board looks like, you have invested wisely. If you don’t go, you won’t know what you missed.
You like to network with not-for-profits that are “like you”
Attendees come in all shapes and sizes – some organizations are large (think hospitals and university development offices) but there are lots of small shops too (think one Executive Director and two staff). I also meet plenty of Board members that are interested in learning more about fundraising. It’s a really good mix. I am sure that you will be able to find someone that is just “like you.”
You need some time away from the office to get inspired
Feeling stale? Attend AFP to recharge your batteries, get jazzed about a new idea for your next appeal, or just to network and meet some new colleagues. I always encourage my board members to attend AFP – not only does it help them to understand my approach to fundraising, it also gets them re-energized and excited about new ideas and new opportunities for the organization. And that is good for fundraising!
